Spring of Living Water: What Type of Water Are You Producing?

“Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring?” — James 3:11

In nature, a single spring does not ordinarily produce both fresh and salt water from the same source. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), fresh water and salt water can meet in a transition zone underground or near the coast, creating brackish water—a mixture that only certain forms of life can tolerate. James draws on this familiar truth: the character of a source is revealed by what flows from it.

In James 3, James warns us about the power of the tongue and the inconsistency of double-minded speech. He uses nature to reveal how deceptive our words can become. In verse 9, he reminds us that people are made in God’s likeness, then asks how we can praise the Lord with our words and use those same words to curse others. Blessing and bitterness may come from the same mouth, but they should not. When they coexist, the spiritual environment becomes unhealthy, and those around us may struggle to flourish.

How often do we overflow with praise during Sunday worship, only to get into the car and gossip about someone from church—or speak harshly to a brother or sister in Christ when we are cut off in the parking lot? The picture of fresh water and salt water challenges us to pay attention to our words and reactions. We cannot maintain a kingdom focus with one foot in the Word and the other in the world.

To guard our speech, we must remain rooted in God’s Word. We can remember that every person is created in His image and that we were created in Christ for good works. As we fix our eyes on what is eternal, the Holy Spirit reshapes not only what we say but also the heart from which our words flow.

How can you stay close to the Spring of living water today, opening your heart and mind to the Holy Spirit and allowing Him to guide your words?

Prayer: Father, help us live with the awareness that our tongues can be used to bless or to wound. Our words and actions reveal what is taking root in our hearts. Just as a spring should not pour forth both fresh and salt water, our faith and worldly ways should not flow from the same source. Cleanse our hearts, guide our speech, and help us live, speak, and act in ways that allow others to flourish in Your Word and in faith. Amen.
