Preventing Cracks

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock (Matthew 7:24-25).
When building a house, the ground must be leveled and allowed to settle over time. Supporting the weight of a house, the foundation is constructed to keep the building stable and protect it from moisture and settling. But sometimes, the elements of nature are too much for the foundation, and gradually, cracks appear.
The weather plays a role in the formation of foundational cracks. During drought seasons, the perimeter of a house requires watering to prevent the soil from shrinking and causing structural damage to the foundation. Although a foundation may seem secure when the house is built, if the soil beneath it is too loose below the surface level, the house will settle, presenting deep cracks beneath the home and in the protective walls.
We, too, are like houses. When we build our lives on an unstable foundation, cracks develop during storms. What we believe and put our trust in becomes the basis for daily decision-making. If we are consumed by the things of this world, we build a foundation for life that is uncertain. When we experience challenging times, the storms of life beat against us, causing us to succumb to the attacks of each drop that hits us, creating cracks.
However, Jesus assures us of a firm foundation found in Him. Lives built upon God’s Truth are constructed with strength and durability, exhibiting the endurance to withstand the heavy storms. Building our houses on the solid rock of Jesus ensures that we have secure footing on which to stand. The storms may come, the winds may blow, the rain may fall, the floods may flow, but no matter how hard they beat on your house, it will not fall because it is founded on the rock of Jesus. Let’s build on that foundation together!
Prayer: Lord, thank you for being our firm foundation as we build our lives on You. When we are faced with unexpected storms in life, remind us that we do not face them alone. Your unfailing love guides us, shining a light for us to see through the darkest storms. Assure us of Your presence and support us as we need. You are the solid rock on which we stand. Thank You for being our protection and strength. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
