How Will You Answer?

When Jesus saw him (an invalid for thirty-eight years) lying there and knew that he had already been there a long time, He said to him, “Do you want to be healed?” (John 5:5-6).

It seems like a silly question. This man had been physically incapable of entering Bethesda, a pool associated with healing powers by those who were lame or paralyzed. He lay next to the pool but never experienced the water.

Jesus knew the man had been waiting. People passed by, others entered the pool, and yet, he continued to rest along the edge, never dipping his toe into the water. Then, Jesus asks a very pointed question, “Do you want to be healed?” Was this a question of conviction or a call to action? Maybe both.

How often do we make excuses? We are so close to the edge of our calling, but we just sit on the sideline and watch as others step into theirs. Is it fear that holds us back? Do we doubt our ability to swim when we enter the pool of purpose? Maybe it is not about our calling, but about our faith. We let it stagnate while we keep busy with other activities. We make excuses. We blame timing or other people. Until one day we are faced with the question, “Do you want to... ?”

Jesus knew what He was doing. The moment was full of promise and hope. This was a call to action. The man needed to decide what he wanted. Did he want to be healed or not? His answer impacted his future. It was between him and Jesus. No one else was to blame. No more excuses. Yes or no.

Our lives are filled with opportunities, but we often stare at them longingly, too fearful of taking the next step toward what God has for us. Are you in that space right now? Are you standing on the edge of the pool, too afraid to step in? Is Jesus asking you, “Do you want what I’ve put before you or not?”

What is holding you back? Let’s say yes to what God has for us and honor Him with our obedience. Let’s do it together!

Prayer: Father God, You see all and know all. When You present opportunities for us to grow and step into the purpose you have for us, may we set aside our fears and doubts as we put our trust in You. Open our eyes to see the next step and remove the barriers that keep us from living out the purpose you have for us. May we want what you want for us. Grant us courage to say yes to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
